Layered lighting is a technique in interior design that uses multiple light sources to create a more balanced and visually appealing space. The three main layers of lighting are ambient, task, and accent.

  • Ambient lighting provides general illumination for a room. It is typically provided by overhead fixtures, such as recessed lights or chandeliers.

  • Task lighting provides focused light for specific activities, such as reading, writing, or cooking. It is typically provided by table lamps, floor lamps, or task lights.

  • Accent lighting is used to highlight specific features in a room, such as artwork, furniture, or architectural details. It is typically provided by spotlights, track lighting, or recessed lights.

By using a combination of these three layers, you can create a space that is both functional and stylish. Here are some tips for achieving layered lighting in your home:

  • Start with ambient lighting. This is the foundation of your lighting plan, so it's important to get it right. Choose a light fixture that provides enough light for the entire room, but not so much light that it's harsh or overwhelming.

  • Add task lighting where needed. If you have a specific area in your room where you'll be doing activities that require focused light, such as reading or working at a desk, add task lighting in that area.

  • Use accent lighting to highlight features. Once you have your ambient and task lighting in place, you can add accent lighting to highlight specific features in your room. This could include artwork, furniture, or architectural details.

When choosing light fixtures for your layered lighting plan, keep the following in mind:

  • Style: The style of your light fixtures should complement the overall style of your home.

  • Size: The size of your light fixtures should be proportional to the size of the room.

  • Functionality: The light fixtures should provide the type of light that you need for the activities that will be taking place in the room.

  • Durability: The light fixtures should be made from durable materials that can withstand everyday use.

By following these tips, you can create a layered lighting plan that will make your home more functional, stylish, and inviting. And if you are unsure about the bet way to do it, give me a call!
